The Indonesian government has confirmed that the recent floods affecting Aceh and several regions across Sumatra have not been declared a national disaster, stating that the situation remains manageable at the regional level.
Government officials explained that while the floods have caused significant disruption and affected thousands of residents, the impact does not currently meet the criteria required for national disaster status. Disaster response efforts continue to be handled by local governments, supported by provincial authorities and national agencies.
According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), factors such as the scale of damage, casualty numbers, and the capacity of local resources are taken into consideration before declaring a disaster at the national level. At this stage, officials said local capacity remains sufficient.
Emergency response operations, including evacuations, aid distribution, and cleanup efforts, are ongoing in affected areas. Authorities emphasized that the absence of national disaster status does not reduce government commitment to assisting flood victims.
The government also highlighted the strong role of public participation in disaster response. Community-based aid and donations from the Indonesian public have helped support relief efforts, complementing assistance from official channels.
Officials added that the situation continues to be monitored closely. A reassessment may be conducted if conditions worsen or if the impact expands beyond current levels.
As floodwaters gradually recede in several areas, recovery efforts are shifting toward rehabilitation, including repairing damaged homes and restoring public facilities.
