Aceh – Monday, December 2, 2024
Before dawn broke across Aceh and parts of Sumatra, rising water had already entered homes, roads, and places of worship. Heavy rainfall that lasted for hours caused rivers to overflow, triggering floods that forced thousands of residents to pause their daily lives. In several districts in Aceh, floodwaters reached knee to waist height, submerging residential areas and cutting off access to main roads. Similar conditions were reported in parts of North Sumatra and West Sumatra, where continuous rain overwhelmed drainage systems and riverbanks.
For many residents, the floods arrived quietly but spread quickly. Families rushed to move furniture and important documents to higher ground, while others chose to evacuate as water levels continued to rise. Videos shared on social media showed submerged houses, flooded streets, and residents wading through muddy water to reach safer areas. Local disaster mitigation agencies confirmed that the floods were caused by extreme rainfall combined with overflowing rivers. Emergency teams were deployed to monitor water levels and assist evacuations, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
Daily activities were heavily disrupted. Schools in affected areas were forced to suspend face-to-face learning, while many workers were unable to reach their workplaces. Small businesses temporarily closed, adding economic pressure to communities already struggling with the aftermath of repeated natural disasters.
Although no major casualties were reported, hundreds of houses were damaged, and thousands of residents were affected. Authorities warned that more rainfall could occur in the coming days and urged residents living near rivers to remain alert.
By late afternoon, water levels in some areas began to recede. However, the damage left behind muddy homes, damaged belongings, and exhausted residents served as another reminder of how vulnerable many regions remain during the rainy season.
As Aceh and Sumatra slowly recover, one concern lingers among residents: the fear that the next heavy rain could once again bring the water back.
