Avatar: Fire and Ash Opens Strong Globally, Boosting Holiday Box Office

Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in James Cameron’s blockbuster franchise, launched with strong global results during its opening weekend, reinforcing expectations that the title will become one of the year’s major cinema drivers. According to early box office reports, the film earned $88 million domestically and $345 million worldwide in its debut, making it the second-largest worldwide opening of 2025. 

Despite the impressive numbers, the domestic opening was reported to be lower than the previous installment Avatar: The Way of Water, reflecting a more competitive release calendar and changing audience patterns. Critics also noted that the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score was lower than earlier Avatar entries, although the audience reaction remained positive, with the film receiving an “A” CinemaScore, suggesting strong word-of-mouth heading into the holiday period. 

International markets again played a major role in the film’s performance, with particular strength in territories such as China, where the franchise has historically performed well. Analysts said the global turnout indicates that the Avatar brand continues to rely on sustained international demand and repeat viewings especially in premium formats rather than purely domestic momentum. 

With production costs reported to be high, the film is expected to depend on long-term box office endurance similar to previous Avatar releases, which became top earners worldwide through extended theatrical runs. Theater operators and studios will closely track its performance through the holiday season, a period that often determines whether major releases can maintain audience interest beyond their opening weekend.
